Birmingham City and Leeds United face off against one another at St. Andrews on Saturday in an effort to each record their first victory of the new campaign after drawing in the opening round of Championship games last weekend.

The Blues' season began with a 1-1 draw against Swansea City on Saturday, as Cardiff City's epic Elland Road comeback from relegation to England's second division was held by the visiting team.

Following a hectic summer and their 17th-place finish the previous year, when they collected 53 points from 46 Championship games, Birmingham City entered the 2023–24 season, their second full campaign under manager John Eustace, with some optimism in the camp.

The Blues began their 13th consecutive season in England's second tier away at Swansea City last Saturday, and they went ahead on the stroke of halftime thanks to Siriki Dembele's debut goal. Their preseason preparations culminated in victories over Cartagena, Northampton Town, and Cheltenham Town, as well as a loss to Peterborough United.

Jerry Yates' 89th-minute equalizer for their hosts forced the Midlands team to settle for a point. Following a respectable performance in South Wales, they subsequently traveled to Cheltenham Town on Tuesday for the first round of the EFL Cup.

With goals in the 24th and 32nd minutes of the first half, Juninho Bacuna gave Eustace's team the lead. This brace would prove crucial as they proceeded with a 2-0 triumph over their third-tier hosts.

Birmingham City will play in their first competitive match at St. Andrews this season on Saturday, hoping to build on their promising start to the new season and add a first league victory.

Due to their previous relegation from the Premier League and midweek cup victory, their opponents will also be visiting the Midlands in search of their first league victory of the year.

After finishing their preseason with victories over Nottingham Forest and Hearts in friendly matches, Leeds' Championship season got off to a rough start at home against Cardiff City. Josh Bowler and Ike Ugbo gave the visitors a two-goal lead at the half, but Liam Cooper would pull one back early in the second half, and Crysencio Summerville would tie the game in dramatic fashion with a goal in the 95th minute.

Then, on Wednesday, Farke's team hosted Shrewsbury Town in an EFL Cup first-round matchup after falling down once more after Taylor Perry's strike in the 28th minute.
