High-flying Bologna will try to bounce back from a setback last weekend when they play Genoa in Serie A on Friday at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara. Thiago Motta's team lost to Udinese convincingly, giving up a spot in the top four in their last 2023 match.

Among all of Italy's giants in a closely contested top nine, Bologna has emerged as the unexpected hero, upending the race for Champions League spots thus far.

However, Bologna's dreams were severely dashed on Sunday when they lost 3-0 to a poor Udinese team away from home.

The Rossoblu dropped to fifth place as a result of that, their only loss since the season's first day, and Fiorentina's victory over Torino.

The European spots, however, will fluctuate every week in the upcoming matchdays, with only six points separating fourth from ninth, and none of the players in that pack are very consistent.

Only Juventus has collected more points at home in Serie A this season than Bologna, who have been undefeated in their previous nine home games and have won eight of them.

Bologna will also be having a busy week as their Coppa Italia quarterfinal matchup with Fiorentina is rapidly approaching on Tuesday.

Bologna eliminated Inter Milan, the winners of the previous two Coppa editions, from the competition with a historic 2-1 victory at San Siro just before Christmas, setting up this matchup with La Viola.

But Genoa is their first test, and they have been uneasy guests at the Dall'Ara lately, as Bologna has lost its last four meetings here, including games by 2-0 and 3-0.

Despite facing the dominant top two in their recent schedule of games, Alberto Gilardino's team is performing admirably.

But Genoa showed no fear, winning 2-1 at Sassuolo in between and rallying from behind to secure a draw against both.

For Genoa, stopping both of their title challenges was also a huge plus because it gave them some breathing room from the bottom three.

Additionally, Reggio Emilia needed to win badly because they had only picked up four points from their opening eight league games away from home.

The other Rossoblu in Serie A are currently six points above the relegation zone and are still the best-performing newly promoted team so far in this season.

Genoa hasn't given up more than two goals in a game since the season's first day, so that has been based on defensive consistency.
