Both teams are in search of their first Bundesliga victories of the season as Werder Bremen prepares to host Mainz 05 on Saturday.

Werder Bremen currently occupies the last position on the league table due to their consecutive losses in the opening matches. In contrast, Mainz has managed a draw and a loss so far.

After an impressive return to the Bundesliga last season, Werder Bremen seems to be facing a prolonged period of poor performance. The team has only managed to gather nine points from their last 17 league games since early February. Their recent match against Freiburg resulted in a 1-0 defeat, marking their 10th loss in 14 matches.

In a recent match against their Europa League opponents, Werder Bremen came close to securing a valuable point. However, Maximilian Philipp, who ironically spent the previous season on loan at Werder Bremen, dashed their hopes with a dramatic injury-time winner.

Given these circumstances, Ole Werner's team is eager to make a comeback with a positive outcome against Mainz on Saturday. This determination is fueled by their elimination from the DFB-Pokal by Viktoria Koln. Starting the season with four consecutive losses would likely set the tone for a challenging battle to avoid relegation.

Mainz, under the management of Bo Svensson, has had relatively successful seasons in the top half of the table. Although they face financial limitations compared to higher-spending teams, Svensson recognizes the challenge of maintaining consistent success.

Mainz's opening match saw them suffer a 4-1 defeat against Union Berlin, followed by a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt, where they initially led but conceded an injury-time equalizer.

With both teams experiencing sluggish starts to the season, Mainz sees an opportunity to secure their first league win against Werder Bremen, who also seek their first victory. The upcoming match at Weserstadion offers a chance for redemption for both sides.

Looking to clinch their maiden Bundesliga win this season, Werder Bremen will face Mainz at the Weserstadion on Saturday, September 2nd.

Werder Bremen's hopes of a positive start to the new season were dashed by a 1-0 loss to Freiburg on Saturday. In fact, Ole Werner's team has suffered three defeats in a row, including a surprising 3-2 loss to Viktoria Koln in the DFB Pokal first round on August 12.

Returning to their home ground, Werder Bremen hasn't managed a victory in six league games, enduring five losses since a 2-0 win against Bochum in February.

Meanwhile, Mainz also missed out on their first league victory, settling for a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt in their recent match at home. Prior to that, under Svensson's guidance, they secured a 1-0 win over Elversberg in the DFB Pokal on August 12. However, their Bundesliga season opener was a heavy 4-1 defeat against Union Berlin.

While Mainz aims to find their rhythm in the upcoming fixture, their away performances have been lacking. They have not won any of their five Bundesliga away games, suffering three losses since their 3-0 win against Leipzig in April. As it stands, Mainz holds the 13th position in the standings, with Werder Bremen positioned at the bottom.

In their previous 32 meetings, Werder Bremen has a slight advantage with 14 wins. In contrast, Mainz has secured three fewer victories during this period, with 11 matches resulting in draws. Bo Svensson's side has maintained an unbeaten streak against Werder Bremen in three matches, securing two wins since their 1-0 loss in December 2020. Notably, Mainz has emerged victorious in their last three visits to Weserstadion and has remained unbeaten in eight out of their last nine encounters since November 2013. In contrast, Werder Bremen has faced defeats in all but one of their last six Bundesliga home games, with a 1-1 draw against Koln on May 20 as the exception.
