Augsburg, sitting third in the league, kicked off their season with a solid 3-1 win over Freiburg on August 23. Meanwhile, Bayern stormed out of the gate, crushing RB Leipzig 6-0 on August 22 to claim the top spot. Augsburg’s three-goal haul against Freiburg was a rare feat for them, marking the first time they’ve scored that many since late February, after a 13-game stretch where they managed just one or fewer goals in 11 matches.
Augsburg’s new manager, Sandro Wagner, took the helm in May after the 2024-25 season. This is his first gig as a head coach at the professional level, having previously served as an assistant to Germany’s Julian Nagelsmann. Unfortunately for Wagner, his team has struggled against Bayern, conceding at least three goals in each of their last six encounters and losing every time.
Augsburg started the 2025-26 season on a high note with a 2-0 victory over Hallescher in the DFB-Pokal in mid-August. However, their defense has been less airtight, keeping just one clean sheet so far and allowing goals in six of their last seven competitive matches. Kompany must be thrilled with his squad’s work rate, though—they covered an incredible 125.4km against Leipzig, the most distance Bayern has ever recorded in a Bundesliga game since tracking began in 2011.
Bayern’s big win over Leipzig has kept them at the top of the table since Matchday 3 of the 2024-25 season. This summer, they competed in the Club World Cup, winning three games and losing two, but they also claimed the German Super Cup with a victory over Stuttgart on August 16 and edged out Wehen Wiesbaden 3-2 in the DFB-Pokal’s first round on August 27. The Bavarians are also unbeaten in their last 12 away games, winning eight of them.
For Augsburg, striker Samuel Essende is still serving a suspension after a red card in the final game of last season, so Mert Komur is expected to lead the line. Kristijan Jakic will likely anchor the midfield alongside Han-Noah Massengo and Robin Fellhauer. The defensive trio of Chrislain Matsima, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, and Keven Schlotterbeck will need to be at their sharpest to contain Bayern’s attack.
Bayern’s winger Luis Diaz was clinical against Leipzig, scoring twice from his only two shots. He’ll be eager to keep that perfect conversion rate but will likely get more chances to test Augsburg’s defense.
