Qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will begin midweek when the Comoros play Gambia at Stade Ben Ahmed El Abdi, just seven months after the previous tournament.

Group A of these qualifications, which also includes Tunisia and Madagascar, will see these two teams play on Thursday night in Rades.

The Comoros enter AFCON qualifying fresh off an outstanding COSAFA Cup campaign that saw them lose to Mozambique 3-1 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in the third-place match during regular time.

Les Coelacantes finished third in their group, six points ahead of Lesotho but six behind Zambia and the eventual tournament winners Ivory Coast, meaning they were unable to advance to the AFCON in 2023.

Since then, though, Stefano Cusin's team has had a fantastic CAF World Cup qualification season. After four games, they presently sit atop their group with nine points, having won 1-0 over Ghana, one of the biggest African teams, in November of last year.

Since making their debut in the AFCON in 2010–11, the Comoros have taken part in seven AFCON qualification campaigns. However, they have only made it to the main draw once, in the 2021–22 season, when they were eliminated by Cameroon in the round of 16.

Due to their West African status, the Gambia did not participate in the COSAFA Cup, hence their most recent match came over three months ago in the final World Cup qualifying round.

Sadly, the Scorpions' prospects of competing in the North American tournament in 2026 are in shambles as they have only managed three points in their first four group matches, now trailing the automatic qualification spots by six points.

Gambia has played twice under the direction of Northern Irish manager Johnny McKinstry, who assumed the position in mid-May. The team won their first game 5-1 against Seychelles before dropping their most recent encounter against Gabon.

This year's tenth AFCON qualifiers will include the Gambia, who have advanced to the main draw in their previous two outings. They did make it to the quarterfinals in the 2021–22 competition, but they were eliminated in the group stage earlier this year.
