When struggling Istanbul Basaksehir visits the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on Thursday, Fenerbahce will try to keep up their winning start to the Turkish Super Lig season.
The Yellow Canaries are two points ahead of Galatasaray after five straight wins, while the Grey Owls are in 17th place after dropping four of their first five games.Last time out, Fenerbahce defeated Alanyaspor 1-0 to extend their winning streak to five games. Irfan Kahveci scored the game's only goal just before halftime, although the visitors totaled 15 shots overall while holding the home team to just one shot on goal.
The Yellow Canaries have not only won all five of their league games this season, but they have also given up just three goals, giving Ismail Kartal's team the joint-best defensive record in the Turkish top division.
In the grand scheme of things, Fenerbahce have won each of their 12 meetings in all competitions in 2023–24. They advanced through three Europa Conference League qualification rounds before defeating Nordsjaelland 3–1 last week.
Fener will be optimistic of inflicting more agony on struggling Istanbul Basaksehir, who find themselves in the relegation zone following a disastrous start to the season. Fener has scored 33 goals throughout their 12 victories this season - averaging 2.75 goals per game.
Basaksehir's season took a turn for the worst when they lost to Galatasaray 2-1 at home last weekend. Despite facing a bombardment of 16 shots, they only managed one shot on goal. Goals from Hakim Ziyech and Mauro Icardi handed the Super Lig underdogs another setback.
Despite failing to score in losses to Alnyaspor, Fatih Karagumruk, and Konyaspor to open their campaign, Cagdas Atan's team managed to turn things around with a 2-0 victory over Istanbulspor following the international break.
With only three points from a possible 15 this season, the Grey Owls have quickly returned to losing ways and are already in the relegation zone. Only the bottom two clubs, Istanbulspor and Samsunspor, have accumulated fewer points.
The situation is made worse by the fact that Basaksehir has only scored three goals in five games this season, giving Atan's team the second-worst attacking record in the Super Lig. As a result, new attackers like Emmanuel Dennis and Krzysztof Piatek will need to step up.
