In the first group-stage match of the 2023–24 Champions League, Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray will host Danish champions Copenhagen at RAMS Park on Wednesday night.

The two teams are viewed as underdogs in Group A, which also features three-time champion Manchester United and six-time champion Bayern Munich.

Galatasaray returned to the Champions League this season after an unwelcome three-year absence after advancing past FK Zalgiris, NK Olimpija Ljubljana, and Molde in the qualifying rounds. At the end of last month, they defeated Molde 5-3 on aggregate.

Okan Buruk's team has had a strong start to the new season, and they currently have a 10-game winning run in all competitions. They have also won their previous six games while scoring 15 goals overall.

After the international break, the defending Turkish Super Lig champions came together and defeated Samsunspor at home 4-2 last weekend. Kerem Akturkoglu scored twice, while Abdulkerim Bardakci and Mauro Icardi also scored, bringing Gala to within two points of the league's leaders. Fenerbahce

Buruk, who was a member of Galatasaray's squad in 2000 when they won the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup, has gushed about the anticipation growing at the Turkish club as they prepare to make their Champions League comeback. However, with Bayern Munich and Manchester United joining them in Group A, it seems difficult for them to go to the knockout stages for the first time since 2013–2014.

Galatasaray and Copenhagen only previously met for home and away games in the Champions League group stage during the 2013–14 season, with the Turkish team winning 3–1 on home turf before falling to their Danish opponents 1-0 on the road almost a month later.

Copenhagen, like Galatasaray, had to compete in Champions League qualifiers in order to get to the group stage for the second year in a row. They did so by defeating Breidablik, Sparta Prague, and Rakow Czestochowa over the course of two legs.

After winning the Lions' record-tying 15th Danish top-flight title the previous season, they have had a solid start to the current campaign, winning six of their first eight league games to take the lead in the Superliga.

However, Jacob Neestrup's team has recently slipped in form, having won just one of their past four matches across all competitions, including a 2-2 draw with Nordsjaelland last weekend.

Copenhagen will travel to Istanbul on Wednesday looking to improve their overall performance as well as win their first Champions League group match since December 2016. The Danish giants failed to win any of their six group games against eventual champions Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, and Sevilla last season.

However, success on Wednesday might be difficult given that Copenhagen has only won one of their last 12 Champions League away games, excluding qualifiers, and that their opponents Galatasaray has only lost one of their last nine home European games.
