This weekend in the Bundesliga, Eintracht Frankfurt is set to face FC Koln at RheinEnergie Stadion, featuring two teams on contrasting trajectories.

FC Koln currently finds itself in the relegation playoff spot, having accumulated just 12 points from 19 league games. In stark contrast, Eintracht Frankfurt occupies the final European qualification place, boasting 31 points over the same period.

This season has proven challenging for Koln, following a respectable mid-table finish in the previous campaign. The team is at risk of slipping to the bottom of the league standings by the weekend's conclusion. With only one point separating them from the bottom two sides, Mainz and Darmstadt, Koln enters the upcoming fixture with a meager two victories this season and a winless streak spanning six games.

The 12-point total after 19 games represents Koln's joint-worst start to a Bundesliga season since the 2017-18 campaign, a season that saw them relegated from the top flight. The team's struggles led to the dismissal of former manager Steffen Baumgart before Christmas, and his replacement, Timo Schultz, is yet to secure a victory, registering one loss and two draws in his initial three games in charge.

Despite their recent poor form, Koln holds a favorable historical record against Eintracht Frankfurt, boasting three wins, five draws, and just one loss in their last nine meetings. They have managed to avoid defeat in their last five encounters with Eintracht, marking their second-longest active unbeaten run against any top-flight opponent, following a nine-match unbeaten streak against Darmstadt.

After a December with a mixed performance, featuring two victories and two losses, Eintracht Frankfurt has commenced 2024 on a positive note. A potential win in their upcoming match could propel them up the league standings, particularly if RB Leipzig faces a defeat against Union Berlin in their weekend fixture.

In their latest outing, the Eagles secured their eighth win of the season with a 1-0 victory at home against Mainz. This marked their fourth consecutive unbeaten match since their 3-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in mid-December.

Under Dino Toppmoller's guidance, Eintracht Frankfurt has accumulated 13 points in their last six games, ranking as the third-best performance in the league during this period. Only league leaders Leverkusen (14 points) and Bayern Munich (15 points) have garnered more points in the same timeframe.

Despite their recent success, Eintracht's performance on the road has been less impressive, securing only one win in their last five away matches and three victories in 10 away games during the first half of the current league campaign.

Nevertheless, Eintracht enters this match with confidence, boasting the third-fewest goals conceded (22) in the league this season. Their opponents, on the other hand, have struggled to find the net, registering only 12 goals, the lowest among all teams in the German top flight.

Luca Waldschmidt sustained a leg injury earlier in the year, and it appears that he may be sidelined for the remainder of the current season and possibly part of the next.

Injuries have also ruled out Mark Uth (knee) and Davie Selke (foot) for the upcoming match. Selke's absence could see Faride Alidou starting again on Saturday, having scored in the previous game against Wolfsburg.

Omar Marmoush, who recently faced disappointment with Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations, may make a comeback after being away for over a month. However, reports suggest he has been dealing with an illness, likely leading to Sasa Kalajdzic maintaining his role as the leading striker.

Mehdi Loune will miss the match due to an ACL injury, and William Pacho will be on the sidelines due to suspension resulting from accumulating yellow cards.
