Galatasaray, the reigning Turkish Super Lig winners, will start defending their championship this week when they travel to the RHG Enerturk Enerji Stadyumu to play Kayserispor on matchday one.
The visitors achieved a critical 3-0 victory over Olimpija in the third round of Champions League qualifying, while the hosts enter the game off a 2-2 draw against Konyaspor in a preseason friendly.
Although the hosts were unable to surpass their 47-point total from the 2021–22 season, last year did see an improvement in their league standing, which went from 14th to ninth.
In their 36 games last season, Cagdas Atan's team managed 15 wins, 5 draws, and 16 losses, which put them 22 points adrift of the league's top four teams and seven points above the relegation zone.
Despite losing their final two home games of the season to Alanyaspor and Ankaragucu, Kayserispor finished the season with a win percentage of 50% and a total of 29 points from a possible 54 at home.
In fact, in their remaining 10 games of the season, the hosts only managed two victories, along with three ties and five defeats, including a 6-0 thumping at the hands of their opponents in this game.
The fact that they were one of just four teams to upset Galatasaray last season and that victory occurred at this venue in October will give them some confidence despite the fact that they will enter this match as the obvious underdogs.
Galatasaray, meantime, had a fantastic 2022–23 season, finishing the league campaign with 88 points in their 36 games, finishing eight points ahead of second-place Fenerbahce and ten points ahead of Besiktas.
Over the course of the season, the visitors had 28 victories, four ties, and only four losses. They finished the year with six straight victories and five clean sheets.
Okan Buruk's team maintained its unblemished record throughout the off-season, carefully navigating a challenging Champions League second-round match against the champions of Lithuania Zalgiris before jumping out to a 3-0 lead against Olimpija in the middle of the week.
Galatasaray had the greatest away record in the league last season, managing 13 victories in their 18 away games, along with two draws and three losses. They also had the best attacking and defensive records.
The visitors are in strong form to successfully defend their title after making some significant additions over the summer, and three points in this season's first game will be expected of them.
