Israel is set to participate in their initial international match since the outbreak of the Middle East conflict last month, facing Kosovo in a Euro 2024 qualifier this Sunday. This marks the beginning of a demanding schedule for Israel, compelled to play four matches in 10 days after their two qualifiers were postponed for safety reasons by the UEFA Executive Committee in the previous month.

Despite the match being held outside of Israel, UEFA expressed concerns about its safety due to the volatile situation in early October. Consequently, a significant security presence will be in place for the game, with UEFA announcing only on Tuesday that fans will be permitted in the stadium.

On the field, Israel has a promising opportunity to qualify for the European Championships for the first time. However, various challenges, such as the backdrop of ongoing conflict and the rigorous schedule of games, particularly against formidable opponents in the initial three matches, could pose significant difficulties for the team.

Adding to the complexity, domestic-based players have been inactive in league matches since the conflict began. Only a few participated in European competitions midweek, marking their first minutes in over a month.

The competition in the group remains wide open due to the varying number of matches played by the top three teams. Romania and Switzerland currently enjoy an advantage with points already secured, aiming to capitalize on facing potentially fatigued opponents. However, Israel remains optimistic as their fate is technically within their control.

Securing victories against Romania and Switzerland would significantly benefit Alon Hazan's team, especially with a forthcoming match against Andorra. The top two teams will face each other, potentially earning points for Israel, who seeks its first major tournament appearance since 1970. Previous victories against Belarus were crucial, considering both top teams stumbled against them. Kosovo poses a challenge, and Israel's 1-1 draw in Tel-Aviv highlighted the tough competition, with Kosovo facing squad limitations due to the match being played outside the international window.

While Kosovo's chances of Euro 2024 qualification are minimal, they must secure three consecutive wins. Additionally, they rely on Switzerland earning one point or less in their remaining matches against Israel and Romania, and Israel collecting five points or fewer from their other three qualifiers. Probability models show Kosovo with a 0.00% chance of advancing, and they cannot count on a potential playoff unless Greece, Luxembourg, and Kazakhstan all qualify automatically under extraordinary circumstances.

Although the match is scheduled outside the designated international window, UEFA has mandated clubs to release their players for this event. The Kosovo team faced significant delays as the Football Association made intense efforts to assemble their strongest lineup.

In defiance of UEFA's directive, two crucial players from Kosovo, namely Edon Zhegrova of Lille and Amir Rrahmani from Napoli, have chosen to remain with their respective club teams upon their request. Notably, despite the regulation permitting clubs to release only one player, Alanyaspor has granted permission for both Fidan Aliti and Florent Hadergjonaj to join the Kosovo squad, potentially starting in defensive positions.

Vedat Muriqi, a striker for Real Mallorca, will miss the La Liga match against Cadiz, as he is set to represent Kosovo in this fixture. Speculation surrounds the potential absence of Israel's goalkeeper, Omri Glazer, due to Red Star Belgrade's request for him not to play amid the tense political situation between Serbia and Kosovo. This situation may pave the way for Bayern Munich's Dan Peretz to assume the goalkeeping duties for the visitors.

Manor Solomon of Tottenham Hotspur is not included in the squad, having been sidelined for the last four games for his club due to a knee injury.
