Lille aims to climb into the Champions League positions in the Ligue 1 standings as they host struggling Toulouse at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy this Sunday.
Currently occupying fifth place after an impressive five-game unbeaten streak, Lille is looking to maintain their momentum. Meanwhile, Toulouse, following a surprising European victory over Liverpool, seeks to capitalize on that success.
Despite recent draws across various competitions, Lille remains unbeaten both domestically and in Europe since their 2-1 home defeat against Reims in late September, boasting an eight-game undefeated streak.
Of these eight games, five are from Ligue 1, and Lille aims to extend this run by securing maximum points on Sunday. While a draw would maintain their unbeaten streak, securing three points would give Paulo Fonseca's team the opportunity to surpass fourth-placed Reims in the standings, with just one point separating the two clubs.
It's worth noting that Lille is guaranteed to remain in at least fifth place this weekend, thanks to a four-point advantage over Brest. Brest, currently on a three-match losing streak in the league and a five-match winless run, cannot displace Lille from their fifth position.
Fonseca's squad has achieved success in four out of their five Ligue 1 home matches, maintaining a clean sheet each time. This defensive prowess could work in favor of the Mastiffs during the upcoming Sunday match. Toulouse, on the other hand, is banking on their recent Europa League triumph against Liverpool on Thursday to be a turning point after experiencing three consecutive losses and a five-game winless streak.
Despite surviving a late surge from Jurgen Klopp's team and a VAR review to secure a 3-2 victory, Les Violets must now shift their focus back to league competition this weekend. Carles Martinez Novell's side has suffered back-to-back defeats in Ligue 1 and hasn't secured a win in four matches (including two draws) since their triumph over Metz at the beginning of October.
Toulouse is currently just one point ahead of the relegation playoff position, currently held by Metz. Metz aims to surpass the struggling Violets, who have only won two domestic games this season. Having faced three defeats in five away matches, the odds are against the away side as they go up against Lille this weekend.
