Espanyol will aim to extend their unbeaten streak across all competitions to six games when they visit Anoeta Stadium on Sunday evening to face Real Sociedad.
Currently sitting 17th in the La Liga standings, Espanyol are just two points ahead of 18th-placed Alaves. Meanwhile, Real Sociedad, enduring a lackluster season, find themselves in 11th place with only 28 points from 22 matches.
Since 2019, Real Sociedad have consistently finished no lower than sixth in Spain’s top division, and they have only dropped out of the top 10 once in their last nine campaigns. This makes their current position a clear reflection of how underwhelming their season has been so far.
With eight wins, four draws, and 10 losses in 22 matches, Real Sociedad have accumulated 28 points, placing them 11th in the table. However, they remain just four points behind sixth-placed Rayo Vallecano, keeping them within reach of a higher position.
Imanol Alguacil’s side has a packed schedule in the coming weeks. They recently secured a spot in the Copa del Rey semi-finals after a 2-0 home victory over Osasuna on Thursday evening. Additionally, they are set to face FC Midtjylland in a two-legged Europa League playoff. However, their league performance has taken a hit due to the heavy fixture load, with three consecutive defeats in La Liga and four losses in their last five matches.
Real Sociedad have also struggled at home this season, managing only 14 points from 11 games at Anoeta Stadium. They now face an Espanyol side that is steadily gaining confidence, making Sunday’s clash a challenging encounter for the hosts.
With eight points from their four 2025 league games, Espanyol is undefeated this year. They have defeated Real Madrid and Real Valladolid and drawn 1-1 with Leganes and Sevilla.
Carlos Romero's goal in the 85th minute helped the Catalan team defeat Real Madrid last weekend, putting them two points above 18th-place Alaves and out of the relegation zone.
At this point in the season, the White and Blues are still very much in the relegation zone, but their recent performances have been outstanding, and a win this weekend might put them as high as 13th.
However, Espanyol's away performance is concerning; they have lost seven of their previous eight La Liga trips and haven't won in Spain's top division since May 2023.
In addition to losing four straight games against Real Sociedad in La Liga, the Catalan team hasn't defeated La Real on the road at this level of play since September 2015.
