High-flying Santa Clara are set to host relegation struggling SC Farense in gameweek17 of the 2024-25 season of the Portuguese Primeira Liga season on Sunday at the Estadio de Sao Miguel.

The promoted hosts are fourth in the table with 30 points while the visitors are 21st and only out of the relegation playoff zone with 13 points a position above the direct relegation zone.

Santa Clara claimed their first win in all competitions after three consecutive games before the Famalicao match, during the last match in the Primeira Liga on December 30, which they won with a 2-1 score.

The Azoreans struck first through a 32nd minute penalty by Gabriel Silva and Sidney Lima added the second a few minutes into the second half with a headed effort for the Brazilian for the 51st minute, however, Sorriso pulled a goal back for Fama in the 58th.

Prior to that triumph on the road against Vila Nova, Vasco Matos’s tutored team was on a run of two successive defeats in the league; against Arouca (1-0) and Sporting Braga (2-0); the latter defeat an end to a streak of six consecutive victories at the home ground.

However, with the Azoreans back into the winning mould, they have four wins in eight rounds, and this is in the away matches this season.

Good home form especially six wins and only two losses in eight matches on their soil has been instrumental in this giving the hosts a magnificent show this term.

A win for the Azoreans will provide them the total number of points to 33 and be a boost towards a Europe campaign come the following season.

Given that Santa Clara exhibited almost perfect performance at home and beat the visitors twice in two successive games at the Estadio de Sao Miguel, the home side will fancy their chances to secure a third successive victory against the same opponents.
Meanwhile, SC Farense settled for a 2-2 draw at the hands of Vitoria Guimaraes in the last fixture their performance in all competitions so far seeing Farense unbeaten in two at the Estadio de Sao Luis.

Angelo Neto's goal in the 98th minute saved a point for Toze Marreco's team, who were trailing 2-1 with just a few minutes remaining and facing their sixth home loss of the season.

As a result, the Lions of Faro were unable to record their first consecutive league victories since May 5.

Despite the result, Farense's 13 points put them in 16th place in the standings, one spot above the automatic relegation zone.

Marreco's team's performance this season hasn't given them much hope after finishing tenth in the previous campaign.

Their lack of goals and poor away performance have been major factors in their current campaign; the visitors have only managed one road victory and have only scored 11 goals this year.

With just one victory in eight away games this season, the visitors might move farther out of the relegation zone with a victory on Sunday. However, the away supporters have little to no prospect of surviving the match.
