England's journey to exorcise the ghosts of Euro 2020 kicks off at the Veltins-Arena on Sunday night, as the Three Lions embark on their quest for Euro 2024 glory against Group C rivals Serbia.

Neither team has ever hoisted the Henri Delaunay Trophy since the tournament's inception, and the competition will only intensify with Denmark and Slovenia also vying for the prized knockout spots.

Serbia, having been runners-up in the European Championships in 1960 and 1968 during their Yugoslavia days, are making a debut of sorts at this year's event, as they have never before qualified for the quadrennial continental tournament as an independent nation.

Under the guidance of head coach Dragan Stojkovic, considered one of the greatest talents to have ever worn the Serbia jersey, the Eagles had a mixed qualifying campaign, securing four wins out of eight matches. Nevertheless, their 14 points were sufficient to secure a second-place finish behind Hungary.

Serbia's performance in the qualifiers followed a predictable pattern - they secured victories against Lithuania and Montenegro twice, drew both matches with Bulgaria, and were defeated twice by Hungary. This consistency ended their 24-year absence from the Euros since Yugoslavia's quarter-final run in 2000.

With a forward line featuring well-known players such as Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, Ajax favorite Dusan Tadic, and Al-Hilal duo Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Aleksandar Mitrovic, Serbia's recent form has been lackluster, achieving only four wins in their last 11 matches.

However, two of those victories came in their last three friendly games, narrowly beating Cyprus 1-0 and scoring three goals against Sweden, with a close defeat to Austria in between. Considering England's underwhelming performances in June, Stojkovic's team remains hopeful of upsetting the Three Lions' football ambitions.

Less than three full years have gone by since the country was swept into euphoria on that fateful Wembley day, when Luke Shaw's neat back-post volley launched England on their way to much-needed European triumph, before the Italian old guard dealt more heartbreaking penalties to the distraught hosts.

Gareth Southgate continues to give orders from the England touchline despite fresh criticism of his tactical approach and some brief talk of interest from Manchester United, which has since subsided. Southgate guided his team through an undefeated qualification period following an all too familiar England World Cup quarterfinal exit.

England's six preliminary victories included two revenge victories over reigning champions Italy.

Even that victory, a 3-0 victory against Bosnia-Herzegovina, was dull until the hour mark. More anguish for Iceland was to come in the form of a 1-0 defeat at Wembley to their Euro 2016 conquerors, when ninety minutes of huffing and puffing were for nothing because of a terrible lack of killing instinct.

Although England, facing Serbia for the first time since the breakup of Yugoslavia, haven't lost in the group stages since their Euro 2004 opener against France, Southgate undoubtedly made changes to his lineup during the friendly period. Nevertheless, that fact alone may not ease the concerns of those who view the situation negatively.
