Spain and the Netherlands face off for their UEFA Nations League quarter-final second match on Sunday evening because their previous encounter in Rotterdam ended with a 2-2 draw.

Spain battled back from their 2-1 deficit to tie the game at 2-2 early in the second period because Mikel Merino scored with a late goal as reigning Champions La Roja played against the Netherlands.

Nico Williams delivered the initial Spanish goal during the ninth minute as Spain started their first leg match on Thursday yet Cody Gakpo and Tijjani Reijnders responded with goals to make the Netherlands lead 2-1 in the tie.

The second period saw Spain's Luis de la Fuente side experience prolonged periods of poor performance until Mikel Merino stepped on as a substitute following a failed save attempt by Bart Verbruggen which let through a Williams shot.

Spain maintained an undefeated streak since their third-place finish against Scotland in March 2023 until the Netherlands stopped their unblemished record in the current game.

The winners of this game will play France or Croatia in the upcoming semi-finals during June at the beginning of the month.

Since their WC 2010 victory Spain has remained undefeated against the Netherlands yet both teams drew their past matchups including the friendly result of 1-1 back in November 2020.

Before Jorrel Hato was sent off in the 81st minute of the match for a reckless challenge on Robin Le Normand, the Netherlands was ahead 2-1 in the first leg.

The fact that they have only lost once in their past seven games in all competitions, however, should give Ronald Koeman's team plenty of hope.

Holland finished second in their Nations League group behind Germany with nine points from six games, and they were impressive at the European Championship last summer, reaching the semi-finals before losing to England.
